Doom film in production, director changed

After the critically slated film adaptations, that were ‘Aliens vs. Predator‘, and ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse‘ few are optimistic of any film ever capturing the quality of the gaming experience.

There is however one video game adaptation that could possibly turn
the tides. Doom the movie. [Ed - because the game is so simple?]

Since the previous Doom film article
on GamesToaster, things have changed. Irish director Enda McCallion has
left the production, citing personal reasons, with Andrzej Bartkowiak,
who has previously directed ‘Cradle 2 the Grave’ and ‘Exit
Wounds’ amongst others replacing him.

Production has begun with a cinema release pencilled in for August 5 2005.

The film has already acquired the acting talents of Dwayne Johnson
(the Rock), Karl Urban (Eomer from Lord of the Rings) and Rosamund Pike
(Die Another Day).

Screenwriter Dave Callahan has promised that the film will retain
the “hyper-kinetic, kamikaze style” of the game. The story and set
design are to be based on third instalment of Doom, which early this
year reseved a mixed response from gamers.

GTA: San Andreas in stores now?

October 29, 2004 by editor

Today sees the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the most
pre-ordered game in history. The game is expected to sell around 15
million copies out stripping the previous best seller, its predecessor
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, by 2 million copies.

Although it has been reported that numerous online retailers have
shipped the game already, with customers receiving their copies
yesterday, like many games, it was expected that the release date would
broken widely by high-street retailers a day before the release, but
due to stringent measures implemented by Take Two Interactive this has
not happened. Retailers were forced to sign an agreement that they
would not sell copies of the game ahead of the 29 October release;
otherwise, they would not receive their early stock of the title.

Unlike the Tomb Raider: Angle of Darkness fiasco, it appears that
most major retailers have stuck by this agreement. A member of staff
from a major retailer who wished to remain un-name told GamesToaster
that they weren’t supposed to sell the game till after 6pm, they added
if someone was to “drop by with money before then, they’ll properly be
able to get your hands on a copy, that is if they have it pre-booked”.

However, a small number of independent retailers have been selling
the game to those who pre-booked the game months ago. We at
Gamestoaster know this because on the off chance we popped down to the
store we had pre-booked it in and managed to get our hands on a copy.

Unlike some claims, the game will not redefine modern gaming. It
will however be an improvement on the previous titles in the series.
New features include having to cater for your health (eating, working
out), the addition of mini games, bicycles, and gigantic maps.

The game is officially released at 12:00pm tonight, but the earliest
most people will have it is when stores open tomorrow morning.

It’s only a matter of time before tabloids such as the Daily Mail go
on the offensive regarding the content of this clearly 18s rated piece
of entertainment.

The game is describe by UK publishers Digital Jesters, as a
“sci-fi political thriller” and “cinematic” adventure game set

Digital Jesters go on to describe the story - “Players step into
the shoes of Peter Wright, a communications designer currently working
on the Government’s “Freedom Of Speech” campaign. But when his
neighbour’s apartment is stormed by a SWAT team, never to be seen
again, Peter is drawn into a breathtaking world of corruption, power
and global domination which will set hearts and minds racing.”

It’s due to be released on 5 November, and priced at £29.99 UKP

at £17 UKP (around 25 euro), with no postal charges.

An advertisement for the game is currently running in a sponsor spot
for the TV program ‘Battlestar Galactica’ on Sky One. A number of
game publishers have already followed this trend of sponsoring sci-fi
programs on the Sky channel.

PlayStation event planned for RDS

Sony Computer Entertainment Ireland is to host a ‘PlayStation
Experience’ event at the RDS in Dublin on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 of
November.
The PlayStation-only, consumer, showcase format originated in London
attached to the trade-only event ECTS in 2002. It is now been emulated
throughout the world. In keeping with broadening the PlayStation’s
image, this year the UK ‘Experience’ event was held at the theme
park Alton Towers.

The Dublin based PlayStation Experience is ticketed, but tickets,
along with coaches leaving from an impressive twenty locations around
the country, are free from the event’s website, or from promotional
partners the Star, or 2FM.
Besides distractions in the form of MTV presenters Dave Berry and Emma
Griffits as MCs, martial arts, music, and graffiti (apparently it’s
art), attendees will have the chance to try games such as ‘EyeToy
Play 2′, and the ‘Sims: the Urbz’ to ‘Fightclub’, and ‘the
Getaway: Black Monday’ - although to play over 18s games Id is
required.
For tickets, and details on times and coaches hop over to playstationexperience.ie .
