Sony Computer Entertainment Ireland
(SCE Ireland) has this morning confirmed the expected shipment this
weekend of PlayStation 2 consoles to retailers based in Ireland, with
further one anticipated next week.

The shortage of the redesigned PS2 slimmer, dubbed the “PStwo”,
which has been described as global, wasn’t expected. Although an Xbox
shortage is also being reported, it is so-far confined to the United
States.

SCEE has even gone to the extent of hiring “several Russian Antanov
cargo planes” to meet the shipment; however, the situation is
described as ‘not ideal’, 100% of retailers will get some amount,
but it is not expected to meet demand.

The ‘PStwo’ with a built-in broadband adapter retails at 150 euro.

“While the Suez Canal situation didn’t help, it has not been the
main issue. Demand has been unprecedented due to the re-styling of the
console, with a large proportion of existing owners purchasing the new
model” explained Niall O’Hanrahan, MD of Sony Computer Entertainment
Ireland.

“We’re pulling out all the stops to ensure that every single one of
our retailers will receive some supply before Christmas. We would
advise any customer looking to source a PlayStation 2 before Christmas
to maintain regular contact with their local retailer”
